A drunk driver has been sentenced to 40 months in jail after causing a crash that left a premature baby disabled for life. Brandon Payne, 24, crashed his Volvo into a family walking to feed the ducks, resulting in lifelong consequences for the baby. The incident occurred in Brierley Hill near the Merry Hill shopping centre in Wales.
Payne was driving over the speed limit when he lost control of his vehicle, mounting the kerb and hitting the family from behind. The pregnant woman had to undergo an emergency caesarean section to save her unborn baby, who suffered a brain injury and will require permanent support. The crash also left the woman’s husband with serious injuries, including fractures and internal damage.
During the court hearing, Payne expressed deep remorse for his actions and acknowledged the devastating impact on the victims’ lives. Despite his previously clean driving record, he admitted three counts of causing serious injury by dangerous driving. The judge noted that the collision caused severe complications leading to the baby’s disability and emphasized the need for Payne to serve a sentence to atone for his crime.
Payne’s defence lawyer highlighted the defendant’s genuine remorse and mental health struggles following the incident, including panic attacks and suicide attempts. The court heard that Payne’s personal struggles, including a recent breakup and heavy drinking, contributed to the tragic events of that night. The judge imposed a four-year and eight-month driving ban in addition to the jail sentence.
