Electric vehicle experts are warning drivers in the UK about the risk of facing fines up to £130 when parking at supermarkets. As the country transitions towards more electric cars, with a ban on new petrol and diesel cars set for 2035, the number of electric vehicles on the roads is increasing.
Matthew Alford, an EV expert at Electric Solar, highlighted a crucial rule for drivers using supermarket parking spaces for electric vehicle charging. While some supermarkets offer free charging for electric cars, drivers may still be at risk of receiving fines if they park at closed supermarkets. Matthew advised that some charging stations only offer free charging to customers. Therefore, parking when the supermarket is closed may lead to fines of around £80-£130, depending on the location.
To avoid fines, EV drivers are advised to ensure they are actively charging their vehicles when parked in EV spaces. Some charging stations may charge drivers once their battery is full to encourage timely vacating of the charging spot. Failure to charge your EV while parked can result in additional fines.
Additionally, drivers should be aware of the operational hours of supermarket charging stations and adhere to any parking or charging time restrictions. It’s important for EV drivers to check the availability of charging spaces at all times and avoid parking in these spots unless their vehicle is actively charging.
By following these guidelines and being mindful of the specific rules at supermarket charging stations, electric car drivers can steer clear of fines and contribute to a smoother experience for all users of EV facilities.
