An insurance company has revealed that drivers in the UK could save an average of £50 per year on car insurance premiums if 20mph speed limits, similar to those implemented in Wales a year ago, were introduced nationwide. esure, a leading insurer, has noted a 20% decrease in car accident claims in Wales since the introduction of the lower speed limit.
The Welsh policy, spearheaded by former First Minister Mark Drakeford, reduced the default speed limit from 30mph to 20mph in September 2023 to enhance road safety. Despite the policy’s success in reducing accidents, it has faced controversy, prompting the Welsh Government to reassess speed limits on certain roads.
While the new UK Labour government is unlikely to replicate Wales’ initiative, Transport Secretary Louise Haigh has expressed support for local authorities implementing 20mph zones in towns and cities. esure’s Chief Customer Officer Peter Martin-Simon highlighted the positive impact of lower speed limits on road safety, emphasising reduced accident severity and costs.
esure previously decreased car insurance premiums by 10% for Welsh drivers following the 20mph implementation, with further advocacy for the expansion of such limits nationwide by not-for-profit group 20’s Plenty. The organisation’s founder, Rod King MBE, stressed the benefits of lower speeds in reducing accidents and insurance premiums, calling for a norm of 20mph limits in residential areas and town centres across the UK.
The potential savings for UK drivers have been quantified by esure, estimating a £50 annual decrease in premiums if the 20mph limits were universally adopted. This move aligns with ongoing efforts to promote road safety and reduce the financial burdens associated with road accidents.
