Wales Online has shared an article advising readers on the optimal date to make a simple swap in their bedrooms before winter sets in. According to interior expert Chloe Barrow from Laura James, looking back at weather data from the past five years, October 14 is identified as the best date this year to switch to a heavier duvet. Barrow suggests that although autumn temperatures may still be relatively high, a few cold nights often signal the approach of winter. Making the transition to a higher tog duvet at the right time can help reduce the need for heating, consequently helping in energy saving. It can also prevent overheating during warmer evenings.
Chloe Barrow pointed out that over the past five years, there has been an average temperature drop of 3.5 degrees Celsius from September to October. However, considering the rising trend in temperatures, this drop has kept the average temperature above 12 degrees in recent years. It is only when looking at the data from October to November that there are consistent drops to under 10 degrees Celsius. Barrow recommends changing to a thicker duvet when experiencing temperatures consistently at 10 degrees Celsius or lower. Based on the data and predictions, the suggested date to switch to a winter duvet this year is Monday, October 14.
The expert also advises that the suitable tog for a duvet can vary depending on how well a home retains heat. For well-insulated homes, a 9 to 10.5 tog duvet is recommended, while a 13.5 tog variant can offer additional warmth. In situations where heating is lacking, a 15 tog duvet, the maximum commonly available, can be suitable. Barrow emphasises the importance of personal preference when choosing the right tog, ensuring a good night’s sleep.
To facilitate the seasonal duvet switch, Barrow suggests using an ottoman bed for storage. This can be helpful for storing multiple duvets for easy swapping throughout the seasons. Taking into account individual housing conditions and preferences, making this simple change at the right time can help ensure a comfortable and cosy night’s sleep as the colder months approach.
