Family has to sleep in car after caravan holiday turned out to be £1,000 scam

A single mother and her four children were left stranded and forced to sleep in their car after falling victim to a £1,000 holiday scam. Nicola Smith had driven from Nantwich, Cheshire, to Wales for a summer holiday, having saved up for two years for their first trip in that time. The family arrived at Lyons Winkups Holiday Park in Towyn, expecting to stay in an eight-berth caravan they had booked on Facebook for £500, only to find it already occupied by other guests.

Desperate and with no other accommodation available in the area, Nicola had to park in a car park, turn the seats down in their car, and spend a cold night sleeping with her children. Feeling a mix of anger and sadness, Nicola expressed disbelief that someone would target a single mother in such a way, especially during what was supposed to be a special family holiday.

Despite having had doubts about the booking, Nicola had checked with the caravan site prior to making the payment, receiving what seemed like legitimate confirmation from them that matched the information provided by the scammer. Nevertheless, things unravelled upon their arrival, leaving the family without a place to stay and out of pocket. Nicola was further disheartened when she had to spend additional funds to secure accommodation for her children before heading back home.

Reflecting on the ordeal, Nicola shared her disappointment at having to forego their spending money on hotel expenses, calling the experience heartbreaking. The family, squeezed into a single room, missed out on the planned beach and funfair activities on their much-anticipated break. With the cost of living and the financial strain of caring for four children, Nicola’s hard-earned savings for the holiday turned into a distressing encounter with scammers.

As Nicola coped with the aftermath of the scam, she highlighted the emotional toll the experience had taken on her and her children, underscoring the importance of vigilance and scrutiny when making travel arrangements. In the face of adversity, Nicola’s story serves as a cautionary reminder for others to exercise caution and thorough verification when booking accommodation for their holidays.
