An inquest has been opened following the tragic death of a five-month-old baby found unresponsive in his parents’ bed. Leo Shaun Williams was pronounced dead on November 12, 2023, at his home in Porth, as revealed at the inquest opening in Pontypridd. Coroner’s officer Keeley Mason shared that Leo’s mother put him to sleep in his crib next to her bed after a feed at 11.30pm on November 11, 2023. She recounted how she woke in the night to find Leo crying, picked him up, cuddled him, and fell back to sleep with him in her arms in the bed.
At approximately 4.30am, Leo’s mother found him lying face down beside her in bed, unresponsive. She immediately called emergency services, and despite CPR attempts, Leo was declared deceased upon the arrival of the ambulance. A postmortem conducted by forensic pathologist Dr. Stephen Leadbetter on November 14, 2023, listed the provisional cause of death as unexplained sudden infant death. Leo’s date of birth was confirmed as May 17, 2023.
Assistant coroner for south Wales, Kerrie Burge, adjourned the full inquest for a later date due to suspicions of an unnatural death pending further investigation. She extended her condolences to Leo’s family for their heartbreaking loss. The inquest details are yet to be confirmed for a future session.
