A recent study conducted by Fireball, a UK shot brand, has uncovered the desires of football fans for changes in the professional game. The survey, which polled 2,000 adults who regularly attend football matches, highlighted key areas for improvement, with a focus on better scheduling of away games and the banning of VAR.
According to the findings, 54% of respondents expressed a desire for enhanced experiences at away matches, citing issues such as inconvenient kick-off times and restrictions on drinking at seats. Additionally, 67% of fans feel increasingly overlooked by football’s governing bodies, with challenges in obtaining tickets leading to dedicated supporters missing out on match attendance.
One notable suggestion from fans is the need for improved planning of away fixtures, with 1 in 4 supporters prioritising this aspect for football authorities to address. The study also revealed that 29% of participants believe clubs should offer more travel assistance for fans attending away games.
Former England player and Salford City club co-owner, Paul Scholes, joined four lucky fans on a helicopter journey to their team’s recent match against Newport County. Scholes emphasised the value of fan support, stating that enhancing the game day experience is a top priority for clubs.
Other key findings from the study include fans advocating for the return of safe standing terraces in stadiums, managers being able to challenge refereeing decisions, and the creation of an ‘All-Star’ game featuring the league’s top players. Unusual suggestions ranged from half-time musical performances to letting fans decide substitutions through live voting.
Lorenzo Farronato, spokesperson for Fireball Whisky, highlighted the importance of prioritising fan enjoyment and ensuring that the match-going experience remains engaging and fun. The study’s participants, who reportedly watch up to 11 live games annually, emphasised the need for football rules to evolve in line with modern technology and playing styles.
In summary, the study sheds light on the aspirations of football fans for a more engaging and fan-friendly professional game, emphasising the importance of addressing key concerns such as away game scheduling, travel support, and fan involvement in match experiences.
