Many women are unaware of the key symptoms of heart attacks and strokes, potentially putting their lives at risk, according to recent research. The study, conducted as part of the Her Heart Matters campaign by the Irish Heart Foundation, revealed that only half of women can recognise the signs of heart disease and stroke. Shockingly, 28% of women surveyed admitted to never having had a heart health check.
The research also highlighted a common misconception among the public, with 70% believing that women are more likely to develop breast cancer than heart disease or strokes. In reality, statistics show that women are six times more likely to succumb to heart conditions. Dr. Angie Brown, a consultant cardiologist and medical director at the Irish Heart Foundation, emphasised the importance of raising awareness about the prevalence of heart diseases among women.
The survey showed that a significant portion of people perceive women to be at lower risk of heart conditions compared to men. Dr. Brown urged women, particularly those in their mid-50s and older, to proactively monitor their heart health, especially if experiencing symptoms such as chest or back pain, breathing difficulties, dizziness, or extreme fatigue. She underlined the need for women to advocate for themselves, recognise symptoms early, and seek timely medical assistance.
Sarah O’Brien, from Ireland’s Healthy Eating and Active Living Programme, pointed out the significance of lifestyle measures in preventing cardiovascular diseases. By engaging in regular physical activity, quitting smoking, adopting a balanced diet, and moderating alcohol intake, individuals can significantly reduce their risk of premature heart problems and strokes.
The study’s findings underscore the need for heightened awareness and proactive health monitoring among women regarding heart diseases and strokes. Encouraging women to prioritise heart health, seek timely medical attention, and adopt healthy lifestyle practices can potentially save lives and reduce the burden of cardiovascular diseases in the long term.
