Lloyds Banking Group has announced the closure of 15 branches in Wales by the end of 2025, as part of a wider plan to shut nearly 300 branches across the UK under its brands Lloyds Bank, Halifax, and Bank of Scotland. In Wales, seven Lloyds Banks and eight Halifax banks are set to close, drawing criticism for the impact on the elderly. Alastair Douglas, CEO of Totally Money, expressed concerns for the elderly and vulnerable, highlighting the importance of ensuring everyone can access banking services as the world becomes more digital.
The closures aim to align with the increasing popularity of mobile banking, with over 19.5 million customers using the Lloyds app for banking needs. Customers are encouraged to explore alternative banking options if they are unhappy with their current provider. Lloyds Banking Group assures that services can still be accessed through various channels like online banking, phone banking, Banking Hubs, Post Offices, and community bankers.
The list of Lloyds Banks and Halifax banks closing in Wales in 2024 and 2025 includes branches in locations such as Brecon, Caernarfon, Cardigan, Newtown, Tonypandy, Aberdare, Abergavenny, Barry, and Port Talbot, among others.
Additionally, the Bank of Scotland is also shutting down multiple branches across different areas in 2024 and 2025, affecting communities in locations like Aviemore, Banff, Bathgate, Bonnyrigg, Campbeltown, Cumnock, and many more.
The closures of these branches have raised concerns about accessibility to banking services, especially for those who may struggle with digital solutions. Customers are advised to explore the available options and utilise services that best suit their needs to ensure continued access to essential banking facilities.
