GP warns daily habit could be making skin condition worse and aging you prematurely

A GP has raised awareness that a daily habit could exacerbate skin conditions and cause premature aging, as reported by Wales Online. Dr. Bhavini Shah from LloydsPharmacy Online Doctor highlighted an overlooked side effect that could worsen acne and lead to wrinkles. The chemicals in e-liquids from vaping can irritate the skin, potentially causing acne and allergic reactions, particularly around the mouth. Vaping can also dehydrate the skin, resulting in a lacklustre complexion, wrinkles, or worsening existing skin issues.

Furthermore, nicotine in e-cigarettes can restrict blood flow to the skin, hindering nutrient delivery to skin cells and contributing to premature aging. Vape chemicals may also trigger skin inflammation and blemishes, despite maintaining a good diet and skincare routine. The decrease in saliva production from vaping can lead to a dry mouth, raising the risk of cavities and gum disease. The artificial flavourings in vape liquids can stain teeth and trap stains in enamel.

Dr. Shah also cautioned about allergic reactions triggered by certain e-liquid components. Propylene glycol (PG), found in cosmetics and e-liquids, can cause dermatitis in sensitive individuals. Concerns were raised around the lack of awareness regarding vaping’s health impacts, with one in eight UK adults reportedly using e-cigarettes. The warning comes amidst a study where more than two in five adults were unaware of vaping’s potential health implications, highlighting the importance of understanding the risks associated with this habit.

The expert advised those concerned to discontinue vaping and seek medical advice promptly. HM Revenue and Customs data shows a significant number of UK adults engage in vaping, despite the potential adverse effects on health. It is crucial to stay informed about the impact of vaping on skin health and overall well-being, especially considering the prevalence of this habit among the population.
