A grandad in Wales is demanding accountability after suffering life-changing injuries from tripping on a pothole that neighbours claim was reported to the council years ago. Darren Lucas was returning home in Abergavenny when he stumbled over a 10ft-long pothole in the lane outside his house, resulting in a spine fracture and other severe injuries.
Darren, a grandfather of four, initially received painkillers at A&E but went undiagnosed with a broken spine, leading to further health deterioration over time. It was only a year later, after collapsing at home, that an MRI revealed the extent of his injuries. He underwent a complex surgery, spent 11 days in ICU, and had to relearn walking with assistance due to the accident.
Despite a neighbour’s previous report to Monmouthshire County Council about the pothole, no action was taken, and Darren feels abandoned by the lack of responsibility taken. He expressed frustration over the council’s dismissal of his suffering and plans to relocate due to the psychological impact of the incident.
Darren continues to struggle with mobility issues and chronic pain, attending regular physiotherapy sessions but remains fearful of potential falls. His determination to hold the council accountable remains steadfast, as he believes the negligence should have been rectified long before his accident occurred.
One neighbour, who preferred to remain anonymous, echoed similar frustrations with the lack of maintenance on the road and the council’s response to reported issues. Monmouthshire County Council has been contacted for comment on the matter, with the community seeking justice for Darren’s preventable injuries.
