In Bridgend, approval has been granted by Bridgend Council for the demolition of a redundant and dilapidated building at the Princess of Wales Hospital. The building, located on the hospital’s eastern fringe, had served as a former nurses’ teaching block but has been left vacant and in disrepair for approximately 15 years.
The small building, comprising a flat-roofed wooden-framed structure with fibreglass insulation, was reported to have significant damage, including a leaking roof with warped and exposed boards, and collapsed ceilings revealing wooden beams. The local planning authority gave the go-ahead to tear down the building on October 8 following a planning application by Cwm Taf Morgannwg University Health Board.
This decision comes after a recent critical incident that necessitated the closure of an entire top floor of the hospital due to extensive roof damage caused by heavy rainfall, resulting in leaks throughout the building. The closure has impacted the hospital’s operations, including the surgical theatre, and the maternity unit was previously closed in September 2024 for urgent maintenance work.
