A young mother, Melissa Kinsella, tragically passed away after collapsing at Antalya Airport in Turkey from a massive seizure and cardiac arrest. Melissa, aged 30, was on her way back from a holiday in May last year when the incident occurred. Her family and friends raised over £50,000 to repatriate her to the UK, but despite their efforts, Melissa was pronounced dead upon arrival in Merseyside. Her mum, Michelle, spoke about the family’s struggle to understand how a previously healthy mother of three could die so suddenly.
Melissa’s cousin, Nicole Waters, also experienced a similar seizure and cardiac arrest, leading to her being fitted with an ICD and tested for Long QT syndrome, a genetic disorder. The condition, which can cause serious complications including seizures and sudden cardiac death, prompted the family to undergo genetic testing. Several relatives, including Melissa’s mother Michelle, received positive diagnoses for Long QT syndrome. Since Melissa’s passing, her family has been proactive in raising awareness about the condition and encouraging others to get tested.
Melissa’s legacy lives on through her family members, who continue to share their experiences with Long QT syndrome. Jessica New, Melissa’s second cousin, was diagnosed with the condition earlier this year and had an ICD fitted. Another cousin, Missy Smyth, also shared her encounter with Long QT syndrome, recounting her cardiac arrest and the implantation of an ICD to regulate her heart rhythm.
In memory of Melissa, her family is organising a fundraiser for the Liverpool Heart and Chest Hospital Charity and the Cardiac Risk in the Young. The event, set for September 14, will feature activities for all ages, aiming to raise awareness and funds to support further research and treatment for cardiac conditions. Melissa’s family continues to honour her memory and raise awareness about the importance of genetic testing and early detection of heart conditions.
