Holiday park fun in Northumberland took a frightening turn as a clash between two families escalated into violence, as reported by Chronicle Live. The incident occurred at Haggerston Castle Holiday Park near Berwick-upon-Tweed, where dozens of people witnessed an altercation unfold in a dining area. John Ward, not initially involved, reacted impulsively upon seeing his mother being removed by security, leading to a mass disturbance involving around 20 people.
Newcastle Crown Court heard that Ward threw a punch, attempted to smash a glass, and ended up breaking a gin glass during the altercation. The presence of children added to the distress, with some seen clinging to their parents during the chaotic scenes. The court was told that the fight erupted between two families, involving about 15 to 20 individuals, and was captured on CCTV.
The prosecutor, Matthew Hopkins, described the situation as involving women initially fighting, leading to Ward charging in after seeing his mother escorted out of the dining area by security. Ward was disarmed by a security guard after grabbing a bottle, then proceeded to smash a gin glass before punching someone. The court emphasized the fear and distress caused by Ward’s actions, especially to the children present.
Ward, 23, received a sentence of 18 months suspended for the same duration, accompanied by 150 hours of unpaid work and a “thinking skills programme.” His defense lawyer, Liam O’Brien, highlighted Ward’s immaturity and the emotional trigger of seeing his mother mistreated during the incident. The judge recognised the severity of the altercation, noting the impact on public safety, particularly on the children present.
