Hospice nurse shares death that left her amazed – ‘He chose when to die’

Hospice Nurse Shares Astonishing Story of Patient’s Chosen Time of Death

Julie McFadden, a hospice nurse widely known as Nurse Julie, has gained popularity on social media for candidly sharing her experiences with patients and death to provide insight and education on end-of-life care. In a recent podcast interview with NHS surgeon and social media personality Dr Karan Rajan, Julie recounted some cases that left her perplexed and without explanation.

One phenomenon she described is patients who seem to have the ability to choose when they will die. Julie revealed, “Every once in a while I’ll see someone who basically chooses when they’re going to die.” Patients have told her things like, “I’m going to die after this date” or “I’ll wait for my daughter’s wedding,” and subsequently pass away as predicted, even when they weren’t in immediate danger.

Another intriguing observation Julie shared is about patients who report seeing deceased loved ones or pets before their own passing. Contrary to the typical portrayal in movies, these visions often occur around three weeks before death and involve alert and coherent patients who interact with these apparitions.

As a former ICU nurse, Julie admitted that her perspective on death shifted when she witnessed a patient’s passing in hospice care rather than the emergency department. This experience prompted her to start sharing her insights on social media and led to the publication of her book titled “Nothing to Fear”, which explores the topic of death and dying.

Julie’s openness about these profound experiences aims to demystify death and provide comfort and understanding to those facing the end of life. Her reflections offer a unique and insightful perspective on the mysteries surrounding death and dying, shedding light on the complexities of the human experience during this transition.

The remarkable stories shared by Julie McFadden demonstrate the profound emotional and spiritual aspects of end-of-life care, highlighting the need for greater awareness and compassion in supporting individuals through this significant stage of life. Through her work, Nurse Julie embodies not only the dedication and expertise of a healthcare professional but also the sensitivity and empathy essential in providing holistic care to patients and their families.
