How a Welsh husband and wife got people all over Rwanda playing rugby and transformed their lives

A Welsh husband and wife, along with a university student, have made a significant impact in Rwanda by introducing rugby to communities across the country. The Friends of Rwanda Rugby, a charity founded in 2007 by a former Aberystwyth University student, aims to promote reconciliation, health, and wellbeing through the sport. Mary and Glyn Watkins from Newport, who volunteered with the charity, played a pivotal role in expanding rugby in Rwanda. They funded additional rugby development officers to enhance the sport’s reach in the region, leading to the charity’s growth over the years.

The couple’s dedication to the cause has seen the charity develop from employing five officers to now having 17 spread across half of Rwanda’s districts. Their efforts have not only popularised rugby but have also had a positive impact on the lives of individuals in Rwanda. Through the charity’s initiatives, many participants have gone on to become rugby development officers, national team players, and even administrators within the Rwandan rugby federation.

Former professional rugby player Cliff Street, who volunteered with the charity, described his experiences as life-changing. He highlighted the profound impact of volunteering with Friends of Rwanda Rugby, not only on Rwandan children but also on everyone involved in the initiative. The charity’s work has not only introduced the sport to children but has also fostered camaraderie, teamwork, and a passion for rugby among participants of all ages and abilities.

Documenting the charity’s work, Glenn Edwards, a photo journalist, captured poignant moments during their tours in Rwanda. His book, “Rugby to Rwanda,” showcases the transformative journey of the charity and the individuals involved in spreading the joy of rugby across the country. The dedication of the charity and its volunteers has not only popularised rugby in Rwanda but has also brought about significant personal growth and positive experiences for all those involved.

As Friends of Rwanda Rugby continues its mission, the charity is looking for more coaches, teachers, and rugby enthusiasts to join them on future trips to Rwanda. By expanding their reach and delivering essential equipment and coaching to communities, the charity aims to empower individuals through sport and create lasting positive change. If you are interested in supporting their cause or acquiring a copy of Mr Edwards’s book, you can reach out to the charity via email at info@friendsofrwandarugby.org.uk.

In conclusion, the efforts of the Welsh couple and volunteers like Cliff Street have not only popularised rugby in Rwanda but have also touched the lives of many individuals, fostering a sense of community, empowerment, and passion for the sport. Through their dedication and commitment to the charity’s mission, they have paved the way for a brighter future for rugby enthusiasts in Rwanda.
