HS2 Ltd has unveiled test designs for its high-speed trains, aiming to create the most comfortable seats on any UK rail service. Standard class seats will offer market-leading legroom of 87cm, showcased in full-size concepts at train manufacturer Alstom’s factory in Derby. The latest version features airline-style seats with amenities such as a fold-down table, electronic device shelf, reading light, coat hook, USB-C socket, and two three-pin plug sockets.
Passengers have expressed discontent with uncomfortable seats on existing trains, pointing out issues with thin padding and lack of recline space. HS2 Ltd senior rolling stock engineer, James Dawson, states their goal is to provide the most comfortable train seat in the UK. The project is a collaboration with the West Coast Partnership, aiming for significant improvements in seat design to address past criticisms.
The design process began in 2022 following a £1.9 billion contract award to an Alstom-Hitachi joint venture for the construction of 54 high-speed trains. Consultations with various user groups have led to mock-ups of train carriage sections, with further testing and adjustments expected before the final design in early 2026. Onboard facilities will include enhanced toilets with storage shelves, real-time information screens, and accommodations for bicycles, wheelchairs, and pushchairs.
HS2 trains will feature bookable spaces, level boarding, and increased headroom to cater to diverse passenger needs. Design revisions based on user feedback aim to balance the comfort requirements of different groups. The project focuses on addressing past criticisms of inter-city seat designs, with a commitment to providing a significantly improved travel experience for passengers on the future high-speed rail service.
