Huge plans to transform Welsh tourist attraction

Plans have been unveiled to enhance a popular tourist attraction in Wales. Fonmon Castle in the Vale of Glamorgan is set to undergo a transformation that includes the addition of new facilities such as holiday lodges and camping options. The proposed developments also encompass an all-weather car park, a restaurant, a shop, an education centre, and exhibition spaces.

As part of the project, a “high-quality, sustainable, and landscape-led holiday lodge development” will be established. This development will feature a variety of lodges, designated space for touring pitches, and seasonal bell tents. The detailed plans involve incorporating 89 bases for lodges, 11 tourer pitches, and 20 locations for seasonal bell tents, which do not require foundations.

Owner Nigel Ford aims to submit the planning application in the coming weeks, with a focus on securing the estate’s future and ensuring its sustainability. The new facilities are intended to introduce additional revenue streams that will support rewilding and ecology initiatives across the estate. Additionally, a long-term excavation project in collaboration with the University of Cardiff’s archaeology team is part of the estate’s future plans.

Fonmon Castle, which opened to visitors in 2020 after being acquired by Ford, offers a range of attractions including a dinosaur park, gardens, woodland walks, and a recreated medieval village. The estate also hosts various events throughout the year. The proposed development follows a previously approved application for new access from the B4265, currently in the technical design phase.

Ford expressed excitement about the progress made since the castle’s opening to the public, highlighting significant archaeological discoveries and positive community engagement. The upcoming plans aim to create a sustainable future for the castle, the estate, and the local community, providing enhanced access, accommodation options in lodges, and educational opportunities focused on the estate’s archaeological significance.

The proposed enhancements at Fonmon Castle are poised to enrich the visitor experience, offering a blend of historical exploration, nature conservation, and educational opportunities for all who visit the iconic Welsh attraction.
