**Huge Spiders Invade Homes as Tarantulas Spotted in UK**
People across the UK are encountering large spiders in their homes as the country’s spider mating season is currently in full swing. Typically occurring between September and mid-October, this period can extend into November. It is during this time that many spiders seek warmth, shelter, food, and mates. Female spiders venture out to attract partners, with a single spider capable of laying hundreds of eggs throughout the season.
One of the largest spiders found in the UK is the Cardinal Spider, also known as Tegenaria Parietina, often observed in buildings and on walls, growing up to 14cm long. In addition to this species, experts have confirmed sightings of tarantulas, albeit a smaller type known as the purseweb spider. This arachnid varies in size from 1cm to 3.8cm and exhibits some tarantula characteristics, such as robust legs and large, dagger-like fangs called chelicerae.
According to wildlife researcher Adele Brand from BBC’s Countryfile, purseweb spiders have been seen in various parts of the UK, including the North and South Downs, New Forest, and even as far north as Cumbria and south-western Scotland. Describing the spider’s chelicerae, Brand notes that they operate more like parallel daggers compared to the pincer-like movement of other British spider species.
As spider sightings increase during this season, it is essential for residents to be aware of these creatures seeking refuge in homes. Despite the presence of tarantulas, identification and understanding the behaviour of these spiders can help alleviate fears and ensure coexistence during this period of increased spider activity.
