‘I drank 30 bottles of booze a night – now I’m clean after turning my life around’

A remarkable story of transformation has emerged as a woman from Wales has shared how she overcame her addiction to drugs and alcohol after experiencing a life filled with substance abuse. Charlene Chandler, now 36, revealed that at one point in her life, she was heavily reliant on cocaine and consumed up to 30 bottles of alcohol each night. Charlene attributed her struggles with addiction to being brought up in care and the challenges she faced growing up. She admitted to turning to drugs and alcohol as a coping mechanism, with her dependency escalating over the years.

Despite her turbulent past, Charlene found a turning point when she met her fiancé, who motivated her to seek help and make positive changes in her life. With support from her church group, Charlene embarked on the journey to recovery, eventually breaking free from her addictions. Now, she is on the path to launching her own business and pursuing a diploma in counselling. Charlene is set to marry her fiancé on December 23 and hopes to use her experiences to empower other women struggling with similar issues.

Reflecting on her challenging upbringing, Charlene shared that she was placed in an incubator after birth and diagnosed with neonatal abstinence syndrome. By the age of two, she entered the care system and faced various difficulties throughout her childhood. Charlene acknowledged that her past struggles with mental health and trauma contributed to her addictive tendencies, leading to a cycle of substance abuse that lasted for over two decades.

Charlene’s journey towards recovery was not without obstacles, but with determination and the unwavering support of her church group and partner, she managed to break free from the grip of addiction. She emphasised that the process of getting clean was incredibly tough but ultimately rewarding. Her story serves as a testament to the resilience of the human spirit and the possibility of overcoming even the most challenging circumstances.

Looking towards the future, Charlene is focused on building a better life for herself and her children. She aims to use her experiences to support and empower other women facing similar struggles, emphasising that one’s past does not define their future. Charlene’s upcoming wedding and business venture signify a new chapter in her life, filled with optimism and hope for what lies ahead.
