‘I saved my daughter’s life thanks to Facebook – she was dry drowning’

A mum has shared a harrowing tale of how she saved her daughter’s life from ‘dry drowning’, a rare condition where water is inhaled, thanks to a warning she remembered from Facebook. Annie Gallagher was at a pool with her three children when her daughter, just five years old at the time, began coughing after jumping in. Although the girl continued playing, she felt unwell that evening. Annie’s intuition kicked in, leading her to take her daughter to the hospital where doctors discovered she had experienced a ‘dry drowning’ event from inhaling water.

Annie was told that had her daughter not received medical attention, the consequences could have been catastrophic. The story has since been shared on TikTok to raise awareness about the dangers of ‘dry drowning’, especially during warm weather. Annie recounted how her daughter seemed fine after jumping in the pool, but later started feeling unwell. Despite friends trying to calm her fears, Annie couldn’t shake the feeling that something was wrong.

At the hospital, it was revealed that her daughter had suffered from inhalation pneumonia due to the water she had swallowed. After a challenging week in the hospital, where her daughter was in critical condition, doctors found a medication that helped her recover. Annie expressed her relief when her daughter laughed for the first time in a week, signalling her recovery.

Now, seven years on from the incident in 2017, Annie’s daughter is thriving at 12 years old. Annie stressed the importance of parental instincts in such situations, emphasising that being aware of safety hazards and trusting one’s gut can save lives. She hopes that by sharing her story, other parents will be alert to the risks and act swiftly in similar circumstances.
