A man in Wales spent £10k on transforming a static caravan into a log cabin over a period of four months. Benn Berkeley, a freelance film-maker, lost his work prospects due to the pandemic in 2020 and decided to pursue a different lifestyle. Living in a house share and spending £500 monthly on rent, Benn saw an opportunity when his brother offered him a static caravan located on a farm in August 2020.
Despite describing it as a “fixer-upper,” Benn eagerly took on the challenge and began the renovation process in September 2020. He managed to turn the static caravan into an off-grid log cabin within four months, with a total renovation cost of £10k. Benn undertook most of the work himself, except for the electrics and plumbing, learning essential skills through YouTube tutorials.
Sharing his experience, Benn mentioned that the transformation was prompted by the constraints of COVID-19, providing him with both a project and a new living environment. The log cabin now includes a double bedroom, bathroom, corridor, and open-plan living and kitchen space, deviating from its original layout of two bedrooms and a kitchen and bathroom.
Prior to starting the project, Benn had no DIY or building experience but utilised YouTube as a valuable source for acquiring knowledge and skills. He emphasised the empowering experience of self-learning and the satisfaction of turning the static caravan into his dream log cabin. Since moving in, Benn has made the cabin off-grid by heating it with a log burner, using gas bottles for cooking, and generating electricity through solar panels on the farm.
Reflecting on his new lifestyle, Benn highlighted the simplicity and freedom it offers compared to his previous urban living arrangement. Managing his own time and resources, Benn enjoys the autonomy and peace that come with living in his self-built log cabin.
