**Dad’s Health Journey Unfolds from a Twitch to a Devastating Diagnosis**
A dad of three, James Smith, a previously fit and active 36-year-old, found his life take a drastic turn when a twitch in his left arm transformed into a distressing battle with a rare, progressive, and terminal disorder. In June 2021, James, hailing from Dorset, was participating in half marathons to raise funds for the Motor Neurone Disease Association when he noticed something amiss.
“I was training for a half marathon, which I used to do pretty often. I came back home from a run one night and noticed this weird twitch in my left arm,” shared James. “I figured it was probably just adrenaline or maybe a trapped nerve.” However, as weeks passed, his arm grew heavier and weaker, prompting him to seek medical attention.
After numerous tests, including an MRI and an EMG test, James received the devastating diagnosis of limb-onset ALS, a form of Motor Neurone Disease. The news shook him to his core. He grappled with the reality of the disease while juggling a newfound struggle with everyday tasks as his mobility declined.
James, driven by his love for his family, particularly his three children, adapted to his new reality. He transitioned to being a stay-at-home dad, supported by his wife Carly, as he navigated the challenges posed by his condition. While he had to let go of his career as a barber due to physical limitations, he found solace in supporting the MNDA by participating in various activities, including a charity walk and speaking engagements.
Despite the uphill battle, James maintains a positive outlook, focusing on making every moment count and cherishing his time with his loved ones. With a two-up, two-down terrace house now modified to accommodate his changing needs, James remains grateful for the support from donations and charities that have eased the burden on his family.
