‘I took up yoga and Pilates to cure my bad back. Then I found out it was cancer’

A bride-to-be from Wrexham, Wales, who turned to yoga and Pilates to alleviate her bad back pain, was shocked to discover that her discomfort was actually due to ovarian cancer. 26-year-old Alex Macgillivray initially experienced what she believed to be tight hips, resulting in lower back and hip pain. Despite her efforts with the flexible disciplines since January, the pain persisted, accompanied by bloating and constipation in June.

Realising something was wrong, Alex sought medical attention, leading to tests that unveiled ovarian cancer. Following this distressing diagnosis, she began chemotherapy treatment. Alex emphasises the importance of promptly investigating unusual symptoms and urges others to do the same.

Despite the challenges, Alex remains hopeful as she undergoes treatment to tackle the tumours, measuring 12cm x 13cm and 7cm x 8cm. The support from hospital staff and her engagement to James Ingleby-Jones serve as beacons of positivity amidst the hardships. Alex’s initiative with a sponsored head shave for The Robin Cancer Trust and her advocacy for early symptom recognition highlight her resilience and determination.

Expressing gratitude to the medical professionals who identified her condition, Alex emphasises the significance of seeking medical advice for any atypical symptoms. Her story underscores the importance of vigilance and prompt action in addressing health concerns. Through her courage and advocacy, she aims to raise awareness and encourage others to prioritise their well-being.
