‘I’m a dentist – don’t have these 6 foods for breakfast after brushing your teeth’

A recent warning from a dentist highlights the potential damage certain breakfast foods can cause to teeth if consumed after brushing. Brushing your teeth before having breakfast is a standard practice for good oral hygiene. However, the foods and drinks consumed immediately after brushing can have a significant impact on dental health. Particularly acidic or sugary items can erode tooth enamel, increasing the risk of decay and sensitivity.

Dr. Andrej Bozic, an oral surgeon at Dentum, emphasises the vulnerability of enamel directly after brushing and the crucial role that post-brush foods play in teeth protection. Here are the top six foods and drinks to avoid after brushing your teeth, according to Dr. Bozic:

1. Orange juice: Its high acidity can erode enamel, increasing the risk of damage. It’s advisable to wait at least 30 minutes or opt for water instead.
2. Energy drinks: Loaded with acid and sugar, these drinks weaken enamel and promote tooth decay. Consider healthier alternatives like smoothies after giving your mouth time to recover.
3. White bread: Starchy refined foods break down into sugars that can stick to teeth and feed harmful bacteria. Whole-grain bread is a better choice, and rinsing with water after consumption is advised.
4. Tomato-based foods: Highly acidic tomatoes can further damage softened enamel. Pair them with neutralising foods or consume them later to minimise enamel erosion risks.
5. Sugary cereals: The sugar in these cereals easily sticks to teeth, promoting bacterial growth. Opt for low-sugar options like oatmeal to maintain good oral health.
6. Citrus fruits: Grapefruits and lemons, like orange juice, are highly acidic and can weaken enamel post-brushing. Substitute them with low-acid fruits such as bananas or apples.

To maintain healthy teeth, Dr. Bozic recommends a balanced, tooth-friendly breakfast that includes eggs, plain yogurt, whole grain toast, and low-acid fruits like bananas. These foods help neutralise acids and strengthen teeth. Waiting 30 minutes after brushing before consuming breakfast allows the enamel to re-harden and better withstand acidic foods.

By being mindful of the foods consumed after brushing and choosing tooth-friendly options, individuals can safeguard their oral health while enjoying a nutritious breakfast routine.
