An innovative new campaign aimed at inspiring a brighter and more hopeful future has been launched by The Joseph Rowntree Foundation. The ‘Seeds of Hope’ initiative celebrates UK communities that are countering fatalism and addressing mental health and food security challenges through community growing projects. The campaign was recently unveiled in London by The Joseph Rowntree Foundation (JRF) and change maker Tayshan Hayden-Smith.
According to JRF, one in five people in the UK live in poverty and are the most affected by issues like mental health, food security, and climate change. Seeds of Hope highlights how community growing projects and nature connection initiatives are making a significant impact on these challenges, particularly amongst vulnerable communities.
The campaign is supported by new research that indicates widespread anxiety about the future but also a strong belief in the power of green spaces to inspire hope. Sophia Parker, Director of Emerging Futures at Joseph Rowntree Foundation, highlighted the resilience shown by marginalised communities during these challenging times and emphasised the importance of celebrating these efforts to build belief in better futures.
The research revealed that only seven percent of UK adults feel more supported by the government than by their local communities. In contrast, over a third of adults reported feeling a stronger sense of support from those around them, with younger generations like Gen Z leading this sentiment. As interest in local, sustainable solutions grows, there is a growing demand for investment in green spaces, with 61% of UK adults wanting to see more local initiatives addressing the environment and mental wellbeing.
Seeds of Hope showcases various community-led events taking place across the UK, from Inverness to Hastings, Liverpool, Derby, Powys, and Bristol. These events aim to engage the public in community gardening projects to grow their own food while addressing broader societal issues such as climate change and food security. The campaign encourages participation in initiatives that help build a more sustainable and hopeful future.
