ITV This Morning doctor warns women of little-known condition that causes weight gain

In a recent episode of ITV’s This Morning, a doctor raised awareness about a common but little-known condition that can lead to weight gain and menstrual irregularities among women. Dr. Nitu Bajeka, a consultant gynaecologist, highlighted Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) as the leading hormonal disorder affecting women, with an estimated 1 in 10 women being affected by it. However, she mentioned that the actual prevalence could be higher, as many cases go undiagnosed. PCOS is believed to have a genetic component, running in families, though its exact cause remains unknown.

Symptoms of PCOS can include delayed or irregular periods, excessive hair growth, weight gain, thinning hair, oily skin, and acne. Furthermore, PCOS is associated with increased risks of developing conditions like type 2 diabetes and high cholesterol levels later in life. Diagnosis of PCOS typically involves ruling out other conditions and meeting specific criteria, such as irregular periods, elevated levels of male hormones, and the appearance of polycystic ovaries on scans.

Dr. Bajeka emphasized the importance of recognizing symptoms like delayed periods, as they could be indicative of PCOS. Women experiencing difficulties with fertility, hirsutism, or unexplained weight changes should consider seeking medical advice. Additionally, PCOS is more commonly diagnosed in late teens or early twenties but can pose long-term health implications if left untreated.

For further information on PCOS diagnosis and management, individuals are encouraged to consult healthcare professionals or refer to resources like the NHS website. Increased awareness and timely intervention can help manage PCOS effectively and mitigate associated health risks.
