A Ukrainian mother living in a small hostel room with her son in the Vale of Glamorgan has expressed her frustrations over delays in being moved to new accommodation. Kateryna Gorodnycha, who fled Kyiv in 2022 due to the conflict in Ukraine, has been awaiting news on the completion of emergency housing in Llantwit Major. The site, set up to house 90 temporary modular units for Ukrainian refugees, was expected to be ready by the end of summer according to Vale of Glamorgan Council. However, families like Kateryna and her son, Timur, are still waiting for their move.
Kateryna revealed her exasperation, stating she has been given various completion dates over the past year. The delays were attributed to a company providing the modular units collapsing. Kateryna highlighted the impact on her mental health due to the uncertainty of their housing situation. She described their living conditions in the hostel as challenging, with limited space for her son to study. Despite assurances of imminent relocation, the continuous delays have taken a toll.
The temporary housing site in Llantwit Major faced opposition from residents who raised concerns about the proximity of the units to their properties. Some viewed the development negatively, expressing discomfort with the units being close to their homes. Kateryna emphasised the importance of having a place to call home, regardless of the living conditions. She acknowledged the struggles of the past years and stressed the significance of stability and the ability to plan for the future.
Vale of Glamorgan Council clarified that delays were mainly due to a provider’s insolvency, affecting the readiness of the site. Tenants in council-owned temporary accommodation are charged a monthly fee, inclusive of utilities. Financial support is available based on individual circumstances. Despite the challenges faced, Kateryna remains hopeful for a resolution, longing for a stable home for her family after the tumultuous journey they have endured.
