Jeremy Kyle Encouraged Audience to Boo Man Who Failed Lie Detector, Inquest Hears
A guest on the Jeremy Kyle Show, Steve Dymond, expressed to his son that Jeremy Kyle had incited the audience to boo him, which left him feeling very upset after the recording, an inquest into his death heard. Mr. Dymond tragically passed away from a morphine overdose and left ventricular hypertrophy at his home in Portsmouth, Hampshire, just seven days after filming the show in May 2019. The episode involved Mr. Dymond taking a lie detector test on accusations of infidelity by his ex-fiancee, Jane Callaghan.
During the inquest at Winchester Coroner’s Court, Mr. Dymond’s son, Carl Woolley, revealed that his father received a call from his uncle indicating his distress before the show’s filming. Mr. Woolley shared that his father felt unfairly targeted by the show’s host and audience, stating how the lie detector test’s result portrayed him as a liar, despite him insisting on his innocence. Mr. Woolley emphasised his father’s deep upset and attempts to seek support from the show’s after-care services.
A witness statement from Mr. Dymond’s cousin, Gerald Brierley, highlighted Mr. Dymond’s feelings of being misrepresented and mistreated on the show. Mr. Dymond’s brother, Leslie, described how Mr. Dymond felt jeered and demeaned during the filming, leaving him exceptionally distressed. The inquest also heard that Mr. Dymond tried to contact the show for further assistance but did not receive any feedback on the matter.
In a poignant note addressed to his son, Mr. Dymond expressed his anguish over being labelled a cheat and the impact on his reputation. Despite the support from his family, Mr. Dymond’s mental anguish following the show’s broadcast was evident in his heartfelt note. The coroner, Jason Pegg, clarified that the purpose of the inquest is not to assign blame but to uncover the circumstances leading to Mr. Dymond’s tragic demise.
