A report has outlined that journey times in Wales have increased as a result of the 20mph default speed limit that was introduced across the country. Since the implementation of the law on September 17, 2023, more motorists are adhering to lower speeds. This move was aimed at enhancing road safety, reducing accidents, and promoting alternative modes of transportation like walking, cycling, or using scooters.
According to the report by Transport for Wales, key findings between September 2023 and April 2024 include:
– Vehicle speeds on 20mph main roads have decreased by an average of 4.3mph.
– 58% of vehicles are now driving at or below 24mph, a significant increase from 20% pre-law.
– Average journey times have seen a slight increase on most evaluated routes, generally by no more than two minutes.
– Journey time reliability has improved with reduced variability in travel times.
– Air quality monitoring has not identified substantial changes in nitrogen dioxide concentrations in 20mph zones versus non-20mph areas.
Although casualty rates and CO2 emissions remain under observation, early data indicates positive shifts towards compliance with the speed limit and improved journey time predictability. Notably, more motorists are now driving below 24mph, with a considerable rise in compliance across various monitored sites.
The report highlights differences in average speeds across different areas following the law’s enforcement. Initially, there was a decline in speeds across all monitored regions, with ensuing fluctuations in average speeds on various routes. Despite slight increases in average journey times, there appears to be enhanced journey time reliability, making it easier to anticipate travel durations.
With further research planned to assess public attitudes towards 20mph speed limits and active travel behaviours, the ongoing analysis seeks to gauge the long-term impacts of the legislative changes. The findings underscore a gradual shift towards safer and more consistent travel behaviours in Wales since the introduction of the 20mph speed limit law.
