Keep spiders away from the home ‘for good’ with easy 14p lemon peel method

Spiders are not fans of strong smells, which we can use to our advantage if trying to keep them out of our homes. In September, spiders migrate into homes in search of drier, warmer conditions. The arachnids start heading indoors towards the end of August, with September being the most common time to spot them inside as their mating season commences.

The UK is expected to see more of a large spider species called the fen raft spider, which was nearly extinct but has seen a resurgence this year. Additionally, giant false widow spiders, known for their painful bites, are also likely to start appearing in homes. To spider-proof your home and avoid these eight-legged creatures, experts suggest using simple and cost-effective methods.

One such method is using citrus fruits like lemons, oranges, or grapefruits. Spiders are deterred by the smell of these fruits, so mixing leftover lemon peels with water to create a paste and rubbing it on windowsills can keep spiders away for good. This trick only costs around 14p, much cheaper than ready-made spider repellents.

Mike Norton, trade and projects director at Magnet Trade, recommends rubbing lemon peels on places spiders frequent, such as windowsills, skirting boards, and bookshelves. The strong citrus scent not only repels spiders but also leaves your home smelling fresh. Other strong-smelling plants like basil, rosemary, lavender, mint, and chrysanthemums can also help keep spiders at bay.

Taking a proactive approach to spider-proofing your home can help avoid potential encounters with these unwelcome guests as autumn approaches. By using natural and affordable methods like the lemon peel hack, you can create a spider-free environment in your home this season.
