The Associated Press reported that Payne fell from a hotel’s third floor in Buenos Aires’ Palermo neighbourhood. Payne had travelled to Buenos Aires to watch his former bandmate Niall Horan perform, enjoying the concert with his girlfriend, Kate Cassidy.
Payne, part of the original lineup of One Direction, rose to fame in 2010 on ITV’s The X Factor alongside Zayn Malik, Louis Tomlinson, Niall Horan, and Harry Styles. The boy band achieved worldwide success with five albums and four world tours before entering an indefinite hiatus in 2016. Prior to his untimely death, Payne shared a throwback photo of the band on Instagram, paying tribute to documentary filmmaker Morgan Spurlock.
Fans flooded Payne’s final post with heartfelt messages following the news of his passing.
