‘Life-threatening’ warning issued to people who sleep for less than seven hours

A recent study has challenged the belief that individuals need at least eight hours of sleep per night for optimal health. The study, presented by China’s National Centre for Cardiovascular Disease at a European Society of Cardiology meeting, suggests that people typically require between seven to nine hours of sleep nightly. Emeritus Professor Kevin Morgan from Loughborough University commented that this finding contradicts the traditional eight-hour-per-night concept, stating that most individuals need somewhere between seven and nine hours of sleep, though there are exceptions.

The study also highlighted the benefits of compensatory sleep, where individuals catch up on rest over the weekend. Research indicated that even an additional 1.28 hours of sleep could be beneficial, reducing the risk of heart disease. Lead author Yanjun Song noted that sufficient compensatory sleep is associated with a lower risk of heart disease and is more pronounced in individuals who experience inadequate sleep during the workweek.

Beyond physical health, sleep deprivation can significantly impact daily life, as evidenced by a survey of 2,000 people. The survey revealed that 90% admitted to feeling ‘tangry’ (a combination of tired and angry) when sleep-deprived. Sleep expert Dr. Sophie Bostock explained that lack of sleep can alter emotional control, making individuals more sensitive to stress and reducing self-control. She emphasised that sleep deprivation can lead to impulsivity and aggression.

The study underlines the importance of adequate sleep for overall health and well-being. It challenges conventional beliefs about the ideal amount of sleep needed, highlighting the benefits of catching up on sleep over the weekend. Prioritising sufficient rest is crucial for maintaining good physical and mental health, as sleep plays a vital role in regulating various bodily functions and emotional well-being. Remember, a well-rested mind and body are key to facing the challenges of daily life with resilience and vigour.
