Lucy Letby, a convicted serial killer nurse, made chilling comments to nurses in a group email as she planned her return to the hospital. Letby, serving 15 whole-life orders after being convicted of murdering infants, told colleagues she had been ‘fully exonerated’ of any wrongdoing. The inquiry revealed that concerns were raised about Letby’s behaviour at the Countess of Chester Hospital, leading to her removal in July 2016. Despite ongoing concerns, consultants were urged to move on from the case as no evidence of criminality was found initially.
However, in May 2017, police were called in for another investigation and evidence of Letby’s crimes emerged, leading to her conviction in 2023. Letby’s email to nurses in January 2017, stating the allegations against her were unfounded, left staff stunned. Concerns about Letby’s behaviour were further highlighted by nurses who found her conduct unsettling, with one describing Letby’s manner when discussing infant deaths as “excited”.
Nurses testified about Letby’s inappropriate messages following the deaths of infants, describing them as distressing and unprofessional. Letby’s return to the unit was eventually postponed until police intervention. The Thirlwall Inquiry heard testimonies from staff members expressing shock and discomfort regarding Letby’s actions and the unfortunate events linked to her presence.
The inquiry, chaired by Lady Justice Thirlwall, is ongoing at Liverpool Town Hall and is expected to conclude early next year, with findings published by late autumn 2025. Letby’s case serves as a harrowing reminder of the importance of vigilance and professionalism in healthcare settings, where the safety and well-being of patients must always be paramount.
