A man tragically passed away after experiencing a cardiac arrest during an agonising nine-hour wait for an ambulance. David Bye died at his residence in Hill Farm Park, Pembroke Dock, in the early hours of Monday, July 1. His wife, Pauline Bye, expressed her dismay at the lengthy wait for medical assistance, deeming it as “unforgivable.” The Welsh Ambulance Service revealed that on the morning of Mr. Bye’s passing, ambulances in the Hywel Dda University Health Board region had collectively spent over 250 hours waiting outside hospitals to offload patients, covering Carmarthenshire, Pembrokeshire, and Ceredigion.
Pauline Bye recounted the harrowing events that unfolded, stating that despite her attempts to seek help for her husband starting at 6 pm, they were informed that no ambulances were available until it was ultimately too late. David, who had a history of heart disease, lymphoedema, and prior surgeries, deteriorated rapidly leading to his untimely demise. Pauline shared her frustration, noting that although emergency services responded promptly once his condition worsened, the prolonged wait was inexplicable to her.
The executive director of quality and nursing at the Welsh Ambulance Service, Liam Williams, acknowledged the concerning delays in ambulance response times, attributing it to broader systemic issues such as handover delays at hospitals. Williams extended condolences to the Bye family and reassured that efforts are ongoing to enhance service delivery. As stories of individuals facing dire consequences while awaiting medical help become more prevalent, there is a growing need to address the underlying challenges within the healthcare system.
