A distressing case was heard in Cardiff Crown Court where a young woman bravely shared her ordeal of being subjected to controlling and abusive behaviour by her then-boyfriend, Aaron Edwards, from Tredegar. The woman revealed that Edwards forced her to over-eat, aiming to make her undesirable to other men. Edwards, who was 21 at the time of the court proceedings, had started smoking cannabis at the shockingly young age of seven during the relationship.
The court learned that Edwards’ abusive behaviour escalated over time, where he verbally abused the victim, criticised her appearance, and physically assaulted her during arguments. The victim shared harrowing details of the abuse she endured, including being hit with a metal pole, spat on, and threatened with weapons. The relationship came to an end in 2021 after the victim discovered harm done to her pet cat, leading to Edwards’ arrest.
In an emotional victim impact statement, the woman described the lasting trauma she continues to experience, outlining how the abuse shattered her confidence, affected her mental and physical health, and altered her relationship with food and personal hygiene. Despite Edwards’ troubled past and upbringing, which included witnessing and experiencing abuse as a child, the court handed him a suspended prison sentence of 21 months, along with a rehabilitation requirement and a restraining order.
Women’s Aid offered valuable advice for victims of domestic abuse, urging individuals to seek help and providing resources for support. The case underscored the importance of raising awareness about domestic violence and the need for a robust support system for those affected by such harrowing experiences. It serves as a reminder of the devastating impact of abuse on survivors and the courage required to seek justice and healing after enduring such trauma.
