A man in his 50s has tragically passed away after being exposed to a chemical, emergency services have confirmed. The incident occurred in a semi-detached property on Douglas Avenue in Billinge village, Merseyside. Emergency crews responded to reports of a cardiac arrest at around 10:20 am on Saturday. Upon examination, a works van outside the property was inspected for a potential chemical spill but was eventually deemed safe by Merseyside Fire and Rescue Service.
Authorities stated that the individual was affected by exposure to xylene, a chemical found naturally in petroleum products and crude oil and used in various solvents. Despite the efforts of emergency responders, the casualty was pronounced deceased at the scene. North West Ambulance Service paramedics, fire engines, and police were among the responders to the incident. Merseyside Police have clarified that the death is not considered suspicious, and the deceased’s next of kin have been informed.
Xylene can enter the body through inhalation, ingestion, or skin contact. Public Health England warns that significant exposure to xylene can lead to breathing difficulties, liver and kidney damage, loss of consciousness, heart failure, and ultimately, death. The tragic incident serves as a sobering reminder of the potential dangers associated with certain chemicals and the importance of handling them safely and responsibly.
