“A 27-year-old woman has been jailed after the car she was driving hit a cyclist, leaving him begging for help on the side of the road and resulting in the amputation of his leg. Savannah Roberts, from Penarth, sold her car in an attempt to cover up her actions. The incident occurred in the early hours of Friday, August 5, 2022, on Penarth Road in Cardiff.
Roberts, driving her Ford Fiesta, collided with the cyclist, causing serious injuries. Despite initially stopping and returning to the victim, she then drove off, leaving him in need of assistance, according to South Wales Police. The cyclist was taken to hospital and later had his leg amputated at Morriston Hospital in Swansea.
Following the collision, Roberts sold the car to hide her involvement. Through CCTV and forensic work, the vehicle was traced back to her, leading to her arrest after running a red light. During questioning, she refused to comment on the incident. On September 5 at Cardiff Crown Court, Roberts was sentenced to three years and nine months for causing serious injury by careless driving and perverting the course of justice.
Police have released shocking CCTV footage of the incident and body cam footage of Roberts’ arrest. The CCTV footage shows the car speeding towards the cyclist on Penarth Road, while the arrest footage shows Roberts arguing with officers as a passenger in a vehicle.
