A father-of-two has been sentenced to eight years in prison for raping a woman he met at a nightclub in Newport. Christian Okafor, 48, was found guilty of one count of rape after the victim woke up in his flat to find him on top of her, despite friends being present in the room. The court heard that Okafor and the victim, who had been drinking heavily that evening, were unfamiliar with each other before meeting at the nightclub.
During a sentencing hearing at Cardiff Crown Court, it was revealed that CCTV footage showed the victim struggling to walk to Okafor’s flat, where she eventually passed out after taking a few sips of her drink. When she regained consciousness, she found Okafor raping her and immediately told him to stop. Her friends, who were also present, intervened, and the victim was later escorted home in a state of distress.
In a victim personal statement read to the court, the victim described the impact of the assault on her mental health, leading to struggles with daily life, feelings of dirtiness, and thoughts of self-harm. Okafor, who had no previous criminal record, denied the accusations but his DNA was found on the victim’s underwear, confirming the assault.
In mitigation, Okafor’s barrister highlighted his client as a family man with no history of criminal behaviour. However, Judge Lucy Crowther expressed the gravity of the crime, stating that Okafor had made the victim’s life more difficult and caused lasting trauma. Okafor was sentenced to eight years in prison, with a requirement to serve two-thirds of the term before release on licence, and is subject to indefinite sex offender notification requirements.
Speaking after the sentencing, Scott McCrimmon of the CPS emphasised the harrowing impact of rape on victims and commended the victim for coming forward early, enabling a successful prosecution. Gwent Police declined to provide a custody photo of Okafor.
The case underscores the devastating effects of sexual violence and highlights the importance of supporting victims through the criminal justice system.
