Mark Drakeford defends Welsh Government staff spending thousands of pounds at New York restaurants

Welsh Government ministers have come under scrutiny for the allocation of government funds, including lavish spending by government staff at a New York City event. Recent reports revealed that Welsh Government procurement card expenses soared to £1.49 million between April 2022 and April 2023, with the priciest single item being a £15,933.45 food bill from the exclusive Zou Zou’s restaurant in Manhattan.

The event, which took place in April 2022 at Zou Zou’s, was part of a St David’s Day celebration to showcase Wales. The menu included salads priced at $29, lobster kebabs at $51, and French fries at $12. When questioned about the spending, Trefnydd Jane Hutt defended it, highlighting that such events play a crucial role in promoting Wales and attracting investment.

Former First Minister Mark Drakeford also defended the expenditures, emphasising that events like these provide opportunities to showcase Wales on an international stage. He explained that the spending was not solely for St David’s Day but also tied to the football World Cup game between Wales and the United States, aiming to highlight Wales in a positive light to potential investors.

The debate around the spending continued when Monmouthshire MS Peter Fox raised concerns about the legitimacy and value for money of the expenses, particularly the extravagant choices at Zou Zou’s. In response, Mr Drakeford reiterated the importance of presenting Wales in the best possible light to attract investment and generate tangible benefits for the country.

The discussions surrounding the Welsh Government’s spending in New York have sparked debates about the necessity and appropriateness of such expenses, especially during challenging economic times. While defenders argue that showcasing Wales on the global stage is crucial for driving investment and boosting the country’s profile, critics question the justification for such extravagant spending and call for greater transparency and accountability in financial decisions.
