Money Saving Expert and presenter, Martin Lewis, is advising consumers to leverage their energy provider code to secure the most affordable gas and electricity rates as bills rise by an average of £49 starting Tuesday. The increase comes following Ofgem’s decision to raise the price cap to £1,717 per year for a typical household in England, Scotland, and Wales from the previous £1,568. This price cap sets the maximum amount energy suppliers can charge per kilowatt hour, based on average usage.
The surge in prices is attributed to increasing wholesale prices in the international energy market, influenced by geopolitical tensions and extreme weather events. Ofgem’s chief executive, Jonathan Brearley, highlights the impact of rising gas costs on household bills and encourages consumers to explore better tariff options. Martin Lewis emphasises the potential savings from switching suppliers and considering fixed-price energy tariffs.
Consumers are urged to compare deals and select the most cost-effective option based on individual circumstances. Using comparison sites and considering fixed-term deals around the price cap are recommended strategies. Ofgem also advises people to utilise state benefits, such as pension credit, to alleviate energy bill burdens. An estimated 880,000 households are eligible for support, including winter fuel payments up to £300 for those on pension credit.
Energy companies are encouraged to collaborate with customers to devise manageable payment plans. Richard Lane from debt charity StepChange expresses concern over potential financial strain caused by the price cap hike and calls for targeted assistance for vulnerable households.
