A massive cannabis trafficking operation in Swansea, Wales, involving hundreds of thousands of pounds worth of the drug has been dismantled by authorities. Swansea Crown Court heard that Joshua O’Sullivan oversaw the operation, which entailed buying and selling multiple kilograms of cannabis and employing professional couriers to transport cash and drugs across the UK.
The operation was exposed following an investigation by Tarian, the southern Welsh organised crime unit, which included surveillance of a flat in Swansea Marina. O’Sullivan has been sentenced to 58 months in prison, while one of his couriers, Emmanuel Adewole, received a 33-month sentence. The court described the cannabis trafficking as being conducted on a commercial scale.
The investigation, named Operation Drive, involved monitoring the movements of a blue BMW car, which led to the arrests of O’Sullivan and Adewole. Police found significant amounts of cash and cannabis during the operation, including £125,390 in cash seized from the BMW and 6kg of cannabis worth £39,000 found in O’Sullivan’s possession. Adewole’s flat in Swansea Marina was also searched, uncovering cannabis, weighing scales, and cash.
Messages found on O’Sullivan’s phone revealed his involvement in the wholesale buying of cannabis from suppliers across the UK and his use of professional couriers to transport the illegal substances. O’Sullivan and Adewole pleaded guilty to various charges related to drug trafficking and possession of criminal property.
O’Sullivan, with a one-third discount for his guilty plea, was sentenced to 58 months in prison. Adewole, with a one-quarter discount for his later guilty pleas, received a 33-month sentence. Both will serve up to half of their sentences in custody before being released on licence. O’Sullivan left the sentencing hearing before its conclusion.
The court noted ongoing proceedings against the driver stopped by Avon and Somerset Police in connection to the operation. The case underscores the authorities’ continuous efforts to combat drug trafficking in the region and highlights the serious consequences individuals involved in such illicit activities may face.
