In a first, toy manufacturing giant Mattel has released a new Barbie to help celebrate one of the largest Indian festivals of the year, Diwali. The Barbie Signature Diwali doll has been unveiled to represent the “fashion-forward modern Indian woman of today”. Released ahead of the Hindu festival of light, Diwali, the new Barbie doll adorns a traditional Indian outfit designed by world-class Indian fashion designer, Anita Dongre.

The doll looks to pay homage to Anita’s heritage and the “time-honoured craftsmanship of the rural women artisans who sustain its traditions.” “Designing the Barbie Diwali doll has truly been a fun and fulfilling experience,” said Anita Dongre. “This Barbie Diwali doll represents the fashion-forward modern woman, who wears India on her sleeve with pride.”

The Hindu festival of Diwali is celebrated each year to commemorate the victory of good over evil and is traditionally celebrated with gifts, sweets, lights and firecrackers and wearing traditional clothing. The newly released doll wears the Moonlight Bloom set which is a contemporary take on the traditional lehenga, while the outfit is paired with a Rajasthan-inspired koti vest, highlighted with nature-inspired motifs.

Anita added that she hopes the new Diwali Barbie will inspire kids across the globe. She said: “I’m honoured for this opportunity to represent contemporary Indian fashion on a global platform and hope that it inspires kids across the world to connect with their culture and heritage.”
