The Met Office is predicting the first frost of autumn as a sudden ‘shift’ in weather is expected. According to Wales Online, the weather is set to turn “decidedly cooler” into the weekend, with frost likely for much of the UK overnight on Friday and a more autumnal feel to daytime temperatures.
After a week of heavy rain and thundery showers, Friday will bring further outbreaks of rain in central and southern areas of the UK, accompanied by some sunny spells in the north. The Met Office anticipates a change in the dominant weather regime, with temperatures dropping significantly and the possibility of frost overnight as autumn sets in.
Met Office deputy chief meteorologist Brent Walker stated, “A north-westerly flow of air is developing, bringing cooler air from the north over the UK and dropping temperatures into the weekend and possibly below freezing overnight for some. Some isolated showers are possible through the weekend, though it will largely be drier for many, with some sunny spells.”
Looking ahead, the forecast suggests that wet and windy weather may return late on Sunday and into the following week. The Met Office outlook for Wales over the weekend includes windy conditions on Friday, with rain clearing to sunshine and showers. The weekend is expected to be mainly fine, but some chilly nights with temperatures below average are forecasted, followed by wet and windy conditions on Sunday night.
These temperature fluctuations come after a week of very wet weather, particularly in parts of England. Some areas in Oxfordshire saw over 100mm of rain on Monday, with South Newington recording 111.4mm of rain—more than double the county’s long-term average for September.
Looking further ahead into early October, the forecast remains unsettled with occasional spells of rain and strong winds expected across the UK. There may be some drier interludes where patchy fog and frost could form at night. Overall, temperatures are predicted to be near or slightly below normal for this time of year. The forecast also indicates the potential for more settled weather towards the end of October, with longer periods of dry weather and increasing amounts of fog and frost at night.
