Missed bin collections by the Vale of Glamorgan Council have led to a sharp increase in complaints received last year. The rise in complaints was attributed to missed garden waste collections, which residents now have to pay for. A council report revealed that complaints surged from 495 in 2022/23 to 737 in 2023/24. The report also indicated that 57% of complaints were resolved within the target timescales, an improvement from the previous year’s rate of 51.8%.
During a Vale of Glamorgan Council meeting on homes and safe communities, Miles Punter, the director of environment and housing, highlighted that most complaints were related to waste services. Residents were particularly displeased with missed collections for refuse and green waste services, especially since they now incur a cost for the latter. The council began charging for garden waste collection in July 2023, implementing fees ranging from £20 for a fortnightly collection of up to eight bags to £54 per year for more than eight bags per collection.
Mr. Punter acknowledged that resource constraints, including tight budgets and operational challenges such as breakdowns or staffing issues, contributed to delays in waste collections. To address these issues, the council aims to align public expectations with service capabilities by transparently publishing service standards. Like many councils nationwide, Vale of Glamorgan Council faces financial pressures, expecting a £9m budget gap for 2025/26 after bridging a gap of over £7m this year.
The council’s efforts to balance service delivery with financial constraints amid increasing demands on services have prompted discussions on improving waste collection efficiency. Residents’ frustrations over missed collections underscore the importance of responsive and reliable waste management services, particularly as residents adjust to paying for garden waste removal. As the council continues to navigate financial challenges, ensuring effective waste management remains a priority to address residents’ concerns and maintain service quality.
