Moira Stuart explains scam that caught her and ‘gorgeous man’ who saved her

Renowned journalist Moira Stuart recently shared a harrowing experience where she fell victim to a scam, but was saved by a “gorgeous man”. Despite her long career in broadcasting, which began in the 1970s, Stuart admitted that scammers managed to catch her off-guard in a very convincing scheme.

Partnering with BT Group and AbilityNet, Stuart conducted a training session aimed at educating older people on identifying and avoiding scams, both online and offline. During the session, she recounted various attempts that scammers made to deceive her, including fake pleas for financial help from supposed friends and strangers.

The pivotal moment occurred when Stuart received a call claiming to be from her bank, informing her of a significant sum being withdrawn from her account due to collusion at a local branch. The convincing caller instructed her to visit another branch to withdraw funds in person, all while staying on the line to guide her through the process.

Fortunately, a perceptive bank teller intervened, recognizing the irregularity of the situation and deterring Stuart from completing the transaction. Grateful for the young man’s intervention, Stuart commended his actions, emphasising the importance of vigilance in safeguarding personal finances.

Reflecting on the incident, Stuart stressed the potential emotional and financial impact of falling prey to scams, highlighting the need for heightened awareness and digital literacy. Despite feeling embarrassed and vulnerable, Stuart acknowledged the significance of speaking out about such experiences to empower others to protect themselves from similar threats.

By sharing her story, Stuart hopes to raise awareness and equip individuals with the knowledge to identify and thwart potential scams. As she continues to advocate for improved scam awareness, Stuart emphasises the importance of staying informed and alert to prevent falling victim to fraudulent schemes.

As scams continue to evolve and adapt, Stuart’s message serves as a reminder of the constant vigilance required in navigating the digital landscape and safeguarding against financial exploitation. Through education and awareness, individuals can arm themselves against potential threats and protect their hard-earned assets from falling into the hands of deceitful scammers.
