Residents in a high-rise block of flats in Dagenham, east London, were left terrified as they had to escape a major fire. More than 80 people were evacuated as hundreds of firefighters battled a huge blaze early on Monday morning. Thankfully, no lives were lost in the incident, though the cause of the fire is still unknown.
A Facebook post from a contractor indicated that the building’s “non-compliant” cladding was being removed. Campaigners for Grenfell Tower have demanded answers in light of this, while families described the terrifying experience of fleeing the blaze, including pregnant women and families with small children.
Residents like Karthick Kannaiah and his family, along with Dinesh Raj’s daughter, had to quickly evacuate their flats upon discovering the fire. Mr. Kannaiah described the ordeal as “terrifying” and likened it to a “do or die situation.” Fortunately, they were able to escape unharmed.
Other residents, such as pregnant Forida Khatun and Sam Ogbeide, shared harrowing experiences of seeing and feeling the smoke, chaos, and fear as they made their way to safety. The London Fire Brigade’s Assistant Fire Commissioner mentioned that over 80 individuals were evacuated, with some receiving treatment and two being taken to the hospital.
The fire has prompted an investigation into fire safety issues within the building, including the examination of cladding. Commissioner Andy Roe highlighted the known fire safety issues in the building, while Justice 4 Grenfell expressed outrage that such an incident occurred seven years after the Grenfell fire.
Efforts continue to understand the cause of the fire and ensure the safety of residents in high-rise buildings. The Daily Mirror has contacted the block’s management and freeholder for further comments on the incident.
