Most kids are happier playing without screen time, according to a study by Wales Online. The research focused on 5-10-year-old children and found that almost seven out of 10 kids (68%) reported being happier after engaging in creative play compared to solo screen time. While parents recognise the importance of spending quality time playing with their children, one in two struggle to find this time due to the demands of their busy lives.
Incorporating traditional activities such as arts and crafts, drawing, and reading alongside digital device usage is a challenge faced by many parents. A study conducted by Sambro International, in collaboration with Disney, revealed that tech devices are deeply integrated into children’s daily lives, making it difficult for parents (39%) to limit screen time. Despite this, hands-on activities offer multiple benefits beyond keeping children occupied. The study highlighted that creative play nurtures essential growth traits like creativity, self-expression, confidence, and emotional intelligence.
A key finding from the research was the unanimous agreement among parents (88%) on the importance of supporting their children’s dreams. The poll also unveiled the top 10 dream jobs for youngsters, showcasing the aspirations children have for their future careers. Jenifer Gowran, an arts and crafts buyer, emphasised the significance of inspiring children to dream big and fostering their creativity from a young age. She highlighted the importance of creative play in developing essential skills for later in life.
