‘My boyfriend became my girlfriend. We get hate all the time’

A couple in Nottingham, Kai Turner and her partner Rob, are facing harsh transphobic attacks, as shared by Kai in a recent TikTok post. The attacks range from being labelled a “gay couple” to claims that “society is doomed.” When Kai and Rob first met, Kai identified as male. However, two years into their relationship, she came out as transgender, now identifying as a trans woman. Rob, who previously identified as a straight man with children from past relationships, has fully supported Kai through her transition.

Despite the challenges they face, including judgment from others and negative comments, the couple remains resilient. Kai shared how even within the LGBTQ+ community, they have faced criticism. Some gay men have questioned Rob’s relationship with Kai, raising concerns about his attraction to someone assigned male at birth. Kai, who has been on hormone therapy for three years and is preparing for breast augmentation, emphasises the importance of personal validation and happiness in one’s transition journey.

Reflecting on her childhood in Leicester, Kai recalls a supportive environment where her uniqueness was celebrated. She discovered her transgender identity later than some, finding comfort in androgynous figures like Pete Burns, Jeffree Star, and Prince. Meeting Rob through Facebook five years ago, they quickly formed a strong bond, leading to a beachside proposal shortly after.

Kai’s journey also includes a career in aesthetics, where she is an advanced practitioner performing treatments like lip fillers and Botox. Embracing her identity and pursuing her passions, Kai is unwavering in the face of societal judgement and online hate. The couple’s story sheds light on the complexities and resilience required in navigating relationships as part of the LGBTQ+ community, both within and outside of it.
