A young woman from Eyemouth, Berwickshire, is sharing her harrowing experience after undergoing breast reduction surgery that led to severe complications, including her nipple rotting off. Paige Harvey, who works at a nursery, decided to have the surgery at 18 to reduce her size K breasts, which were causing her significant back pain and skin tears. The £8,000 surgery was meant to help her pursue a career as a paramedic by reducing her breast size to a D cup.
However, soon after the surgery in October 2021, Paige faced alarming issues. Just two hours post-surgery, she was sent home from the clinic while still under the influence of medication, only for her wounds to split open halfway home, leaving her in a pool of blood. Despite her distress, the clinic allegedly dismissed her concerns and blamed her for not washing her hands properly.
Over the following year, Paige battled multiple infections, requiring more than 30 courses of antibiotics. Her breasts were severely affected, with infections causing significant tissue damage, including a golf ball-sized lump due to fat necrosis. Three years on, Paige still suffers from swelling in her armpits, possibly linked to the surgery.
Paige’s post-surgery journey was filled with challenges as she faced dismissive attitudes from the clinic staff, who attributed her issues to her own actions. She endured physical and emotional pain, with significant scarring and ongoing health concerns. Despite the clinic’s handling of her case, Paige is now advocating for thorough research before undergoing such procedures and suggests considering NHS options for better support in case of complications.
Having spent a substantial amount on the surgery, Paige now regrets her decision and believes she may need further corrective procedures due to the unsatisfactory outcome of the initial surgery. She emphasises the importance of thorough research and caution when choosing surgical options to avoid similar traumatic experiences.
